Attach Certifications to a Cost Code (Web)

You can require certifications at the cost code level to ensure that only qualified employees are able to clock time to specific types of work.

This article explains how to:

  • Add certification requirements to a cost code

  • Select certifications from your certification list

  • Create new certifications if needed

Before You Begin

  • Certifications must exist in the Certification Management list before they can be assigned to a cost code

  • You must have permission to Manage Cost Codes and Manage Certifications

  • Certification requirements will be enforced when employees attempt to clock in to the cost code

Attach Certifications to a Cost Code (Web)

Use this method to require certifications for a specific cost code.

Steps:

  1. Go to Management Lists

  2. Click Cost Codes

  3. Select the cost code you want to update

  4. Click the Certifications tab

  5. Click New Requirement

  6. Select a Certification from the dropdown menu

    • If the certification you need is not listed, click Manage

    • This will open the Certification Management list, where you can create a new certification

  7. After selecting the certification, click Submit

The certification is now required for that cost code.

What Happens After You Add a Certification Requirement

  • Employees must have the required certification to clock time to the cost code

  • If an employee does not have the certification, they will be prevented from clocking in

  • Certification requirements will appear under the Certifications tab for the cost code

Important Notes

  • Certifications are pulled from a centralized certification list

  • Adding a requirement does not assign the certification to employees—it only enforces the requirement

  • Employees must have an active certification to meet the requirement

  • Multiple certifications can be required for a single cost code

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t I see the certification I want to assign?

The certification must first be created in the Certification Management list. Click Manage from the dropdown to add a new certification.

What happens if an employee doesn’t have the required certification?

They will not be able to clock time to that cost code until the certification is added to their profile.

Can I require more than one certification for a cost code?

Yes. You can add multiple certification requirements to a cost code.
