What is GPS Equipment Tracking?
GPS Equipment Tracking gives equipment its own GPS signal so you can see where it is and how it’s being used, even when no one is clocked in.
It works alongside BusyBusy’s time tracking platform to give you visibility into both your labor and your equipment in one system.
What types of equipment can be tracked?
GPS devices are designed for:
Vehicles
Trailers
Heavy equipment
Large jobsite assets
They are not designed for small hand tools or compact attachments. If you’re unsure whether a specific asset is a good fit, contact Support. |
What information can I see in BusyBusy?
Depending on the GPS device type and your individual plan, you may see:
Live GPS location
Movement history (breadcrumbing)
Last reported location
Engine on/off status
Engine hours
Idle time
Engine RPM
Fuel level (when supported)
How accurate is GPS location?
Under normal outdoor conditions, GPS accuracy is typically within a few meters.
Accuracy may be affected by:
Indoor or underground operation
Metal buildings or sealed containers
Poor sky visibility
Severe weather conditions
How often does equipment update its location?
Update frequency depends on the device type assigned to your equipment.
Some devices report once daily, while others provide more frequent updates (1-5 minutes) during operation.
If you need more frequent updates, contact your account representative to discuss options.
What happens if there is no cellular coverage?
If a device temporarily loses cellular signal:
It stores location and telematics data internally.
Once coverage is restored, stored data is transmitted.
Does GPS work indoors or underground?
GPS requires satellite visibility.
Equipment operating inside metal buildings, underground environments, or sealed structures may experience limited location reporting during that time.
What telematics data is available?
For supported equipment connected through diagnostic ports, telematics may include:
Engine on/off status
Engine hours
Idle time
Engine RPM
Fuel level (if supported)
Data availability depends on the equipment manufacturer and model. Not all machines provide the same data. |
Can devices be moved between equipment?
Yes. Devices can be reassigned to different equipment within your account.
The device must be physically removed and properly installed on the new asset as well as ‘uncoupled’ and then re’coupled’ to the new equipment in the BusyBusy Equipment Management List. Contact Support before reassigning to ensure the process is completed correctly.
What happens if a device stops reporting?
Common reasons include:
Loss of cellular signal
Power interruption
Battery depletion (for battery-powered devices)
Installation issues
What happens if a battery-powered device runs out of battery?
Battery-powered devices do not currently send low-battery alerts.
If the battery is depleted, the device will stop reporting until the battery is replaced or recharged.
Battery life varies based on movement and environmental conditions.
Can GPS devices be installed inside metal containers?
No. Devices installed inside sealed metal enclosures will not reliably receive GPS signal.
Devices must have access to the sky to report accurately.
Where can devices be mounted?
Devices must be securely mounted and positioned where they can receive GPS signal.
Installation guidance is provided during onboarding.
Do I need to enable special permissions to use GPS Equipment Tracking?
No additional permissions or settings are required in BusyBusy.
GPS visibility follows your existing BusyBusy equipment and user role settings.
What are DashCams?
DashCams are optional devices available for on-road vehicles. They provide:
GPS location
Telematics data
Video footage (accessed through FleetWatcher)
Where is telematics data viewed?
GPS location and basic telematics are viewed inside BusyBusy.
Advanced fleet-level features (if applicable) may be accessed through FleetWatcher.
What happens if I sell equipment with a device installed?
The device should be removed before transferring ownership.
Contact Support before transferring equipment to ensure proper handling.
What happens if my device is defective?
If a device fails under normal use, it may be replaced under warranty.
If damage is due to misuse or improper installation, replacement costs may apply.
Contact Support for assistance.
Does BusyBusy offer DashCams?
Yes. BusyBusy offers optional DashCam devices for on-road vehicles. DashCams provide GPS location, telematics data, and video footage for safety and fleet visibility.
Video footage is accessed through a FleetWatcher portal and is not viewed directly inside the BusyBusy app.
DashCams are optional and are not required to use GPS Equipment Tracking.
How can I view my equipment location?
