The California Breaks Scanner is a new tool designed to help employers in California proactively manage break compliance and reduce the risk of break-related lawsuits. It scans employee timecards for break-related issues and flags potential violations before payroll is finalized, giving you time to review and fix problems early.
What Does the California Breaks Scanner Do?
The Breaks Scanner reviews your team’s time entries and identifies:
Missing breaks that were never recorded
Short breaks that don’t meet the required minimum (typically 30 minutes)
Breaks taken too late or outside the allowed window
Employee-reported break issues, such as “No” responses in the Daily Sign Off
These flagged issues appear in the Payroll Scanner, giving you clear visibility into where potential break policy violations may exist. |
Where Does It Appear?
The California Breaks Scanner appears inside the Payroll Scanner, but only when:
California Break settings are enabled under Daily Sign Off, or
California Overtime Rules are enabled in your Pay Period & Overtime Settings
If these settings are not turned on, the Breaks Scanner will not activate.
Why Is This Important?
California has some of the strictest labor laws in the U.S. when it comes to employee breaks. Missing, short, or mistimed breaks can open your business to PAGA lawsuits and major liability.
The Breaks Scanner helps you:
Catch break issues before payroll runs
Review and resolve problems proactively
Create a stronger, more defensible break record
When combined with features like Daily Sign Off, Minimum Break Duration, and Expanded Timecards, it gives you a powerful toolkit for break compliance.
Who Can Use It?
Any company using BusyBusy with:
California Overtime Rules enabled under Pay Period and Overtime Settings
California Break policy enabled via Daily Sign Off Question
Admin permissions to run Payroll Scanner
