Couple a GPS Device (Web & Mobile)

This article explains how to couple a GPS device to equipment that already exists and add new equipment and assign a GPS device at the same time.

You can couple (connect) a GPS device to equipment in BusyBusy using either Web or Mobile.

Permission Required: Users must have the Manage Equipment permission enabled to couple, transfer, or uncouple GPS devices.

Before You Begin

Each GPS device includes a sticker with two barcodes:

  • ESN (Electronic Serial Number)

  • SIM Number

You will need the ESN number to couple the device in BusyBusy.

On Web

Couple a GPS Device to Existing Equipment

Use this method if the equipment is already created in BusyBusy and you are simply adding a GPS device to it.

Steps:

  1. From the left navigation menu select Management Lists.

  2. Click Equipment.

  3. Select the equipment you want to track.

  4. Click the Tracking Device field.

  5. Open the Device dropdown.

  6. Select the ESN that matches your GPS device.

  7. Review the Installation Date & Time.

    • If the device has not been physically installed yet, you can leave the default date and time.
      ​

    • If the device has already been installed, update the Installation Date & Time to reflect when it was installed. This ensures accurate location history.
      ​

  8. Click Save

The GPS device is now coupled to that equipment.

Add New Equipment and Assign a GPS Device

Use this method if the equipment has not yet been added to BusyBusy.

You can create the equipment record and assign the GPS device at the same time.

Steps:

  1. From the left navigation menu select Management Lists.
    ​

  2. Click Equipment.
    ​

  3. Click Create.
    ​

  4. Enter the equipment details.
    ​

  5. Under GPS & BLE Tracking dropdown, check the box next to Device Tracking.
    ​

  6. Select the ESN that matches your GPS device.

  7. Review the Installation Date & Time.

    • If the device has not been physically installed yet, you can leave the default date and time.

    • If the device has already been installed, update the Installation Date & Time to reflect when it was installed. This ensures accurate location history.
      ​

  8. Click Create.

The equipment will be created with the GPS device already coupled.

On Mobile

Couple a GPS Device to Existing Equipment

Use this method if the equipment already exists in BusyBusy.

Steps:

  1. Open the BusyBusy app.

  2. Click the hamburger icon (the three horizontal line icon on the top left).
    ​​

  3. Tap Equipment.
    ​

  4. Select the equipment.
    ​

  5. Tap the settings gear icon.
    ​​

  6. Scroll to Device Tracking.
    ​

  7. Enable the toggle.
    ​

  8. Click Device and select the ESN.
    ​

  9. Tap Done.

The GPS device is now coupled.

Add New Equipment and Assign a GPS Device

Use this method if you are adding new equipment to BusyBusy.

You can create the equipment and connect the GPS device at the same time.

Steps:

  1. Click the hamburger icon (the three horizontal line icon on the top left).
    ​​

  2. Tap Equipment.
    ​

  3. Tap the + button.

  4. Choose Equipment, Tools or Attachments.
    ​

  5. Enter the equipment details.
    ​

  6. Enable Device Tracking by toggling it on.

  7. Click Device.
    ​

  8. Select the ESN.
    ​

  9. Tap Done.

The new equipment will be created with the GPS device connected.

What Happens After Coupling?

  • The device will begin reporting location data.
    ​

  • Location typically appears quickly, but in some cases, the first update may take up to 24 hours.

Important Notes

  • If you assign a GPS device that is already coupled to another piece of equipment, you will see a warning and can choose to transfer it.
    ​

  • GPS breadcrumb trails and engine diagnostics are available only if supported by the device.
