Task groups make project plans easier to understand, manage, and adjust by grouping multiple tasks that belong together, such as site prep, foundation work, or framing.
When to Use Task Groups
Use task groups when you want to:
Organize multiple related tasks under a single phase.
Plan work that happens in a specific sequence.
Move an entire phase of work at once on the timeline.
Reuse common phases across projects.
Task groups are especially helpful for larger or more complex projects.
Create a Task Group
To create a task group:
Go to Scheduling → Project Planning
Open the project plan you want to edit
Click the Hierarchy Icon under the project name
Select New Task Group
Enter a Task Group Name
Choose a Start Date for the Task Group
Add Tasks to the Task Group
Click Create
The task group will appear in the project plan with its tasks listed underneath.
Add Tasks to a Task Group
Tasks inside a task group represent individual pieces of work within that phase.
When adding tasks to a task group, you can:
Select tasks that already exist as templates
Create new tasks directly within the task group
Define the Start Day offset for each task
Set the Expected Duration for each task
How Task Group Timing Works
Task group timing is based on the task group start date. The start day offset determines how many days after the task group start date a task begins.
Tasks with no Start Day offset begin on the task group start date
Tasks with a Start Day offset begin that many days after the group starts
Task durations determine how long each task appears on the timeline
This allows you to plan sequential work without manually calculating calendar dates.
Move and Adjust Task Groups
Task groups make it easy to adjust schedules when plans change.
You can:
Drag a task group on the timeline to shift all tasks together
Adjust individual tasks within a task group if needed
Edit task durations or start day offsets
Moving a task group automatically updates all subtasks while keeping their relative timing intact.
Save a Task Group as a Template
If a task group represents a phase your team uses regularly, you can save it as a template.
Saving a task group as a template allows you to:
Reuse the entire phase in future project plans
Retain task order, durations, and offsets
Standardize how work is planned across projects
